Staff Reporter“They will totally shatter livelihood of fishermen”

: Nearly 7,000 fishermen, including over 3,000 women from 11 coastal hamlets in the district, observed a fast at Idinthakarai on Tuesday demanding the closure of the nuclear reactors under construction at Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project.
Speakers at the protest venue, St. Lourdes Church, Idinthkarai, said the nuclear reactors, on attaining criticality, would totally shatter their livelihood and the fishermen would be forced to displace in case of any emergency to some other far off place even as his place of work and its environment would be left uninhabitable.
Apart from not sending their children to the school, fishermen from Koottapuli, Perumanal, Panjal, Thomaiyaarpuram, Idinthakarai, Kooththenkuzhi, Uvari, Koottapanai, Kooduthaazhai, Periyathaazhai and Michael Nagar did not go for fishing on Tuesday.
Shops at Koodankulam remained closed.
