Country boat fishermen to protest on June 5

As a mark of protest against the move to promote ecotourism in 21 islands in the Gulf of Mannar, fishermen using country boats in Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi will not venture into the sea on June 5. They will hold a fast against the move which would prevent fishermen from going near the islands for fishing as part of the ecotourism programme. M Pushparayan, convenor of the the Coastal People’s Federation, said the move of the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust to ban fishing in the islands from the first week of June was infringing on the rights of the fishermen and it would affect their livelihood. Ramanathapuram traditional country boat fishermen’s association president A Paul Samy said the administration had decided to mark of the marine park near the islets with buoys. The sea beyond these points is just slush and mud and the 20,000 country boat fishermen who are already facing hardships would be affected further, he said.
