: Fishermen of various associations on Monday staged a demonstration here protesting the decision of the Forest Department to float buoys in the Gulf of Mannar in order to demarcate the core zone.

A. Palsamy, president, Gulf of Mannar Fishermen Protection Movement, led the protest. M. Samsan of the North Area Country Boat Fishermen Association, Tuticorin, and J. Irudayamary of the Fishermen Labour Progressive Movement, were among those participated.

They said that the rights of fishermen would be hit, if the Gulf of Mannar authorities went ahead with the plan of floating buoys. The livelihood of fishermen would also be affected.

Moreover, chances were bright for the authorities to file cases against fishermen, if they inadvertently forayed into the core zone area.
